A FIRE engine made a dummy run past Snaith Primary School last week to highlight problems caused by inconsiderate parking at the start and end of the day.
School run parents parking along Bourn Mill Balk Road are blocking access for residents and emergency vehicles, and creating a hazard for pedestrians.

During Tuesday's mock emergency, Goole fire crews struggled to drive down the congested street and found it difficult to turn on to Pontefract Road because of cars parked right up to the junction.

Anthony Kidd, who has lived on the corner of Bourn Mill Balk Road and Pontefract Road for almost two years, witnessed the demonstration.

Mr Kidd, pictured with one-year-old daughter Annie, said: "The biggest problem is the majority of children that go to that school live in Snaith.

"We're talking no more than a ten minute walk, but everybody seems to have to drive there."

Hensall Primary School caretaker Anthony said he often found himself blocked in by cars when he wanted to leave for work, and struggled to park or access his driveway when he returned home.

The father-of-two, whose four-year-old daughter attends the village primary school, added: "I'm surprised there hasn't been anybody getting hit there yet. It really is ridiculous."

Snaith Primary School headteacher Kate Rowley has been working with the town council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council to find a solution.
She said: "We want to do the best for everybody concerned, and the safety of our children is of utmost importance.

"Parents do take it on board when we ask them to park carefully, but the main problem is too many cars in a small space. Speed is not the problem. We need to get people walking to school to reduce the congestion."

Snaith PCSO Matt Murphy added: "We're working with the school and the council to introduce a new traffic system in that area. Some vehicles are parking illegally and causing obstruction. We're clamping down and will be handing out fines and tickets, if necessary." (L0003TS) Picture: Tony Saxton
