CAMPAIGNERS fighting against plans for an eco-town on their doorstep have sent the decision-making minister a postcard calling on him to reject the bid.
Battling villagers in Kellington, Eggborough and Beal posted the document to Iain Wright MP, which read: 'Enjoy your summer, let us enjoy ours – reject Willow Green now.'

District ward member Coun Mary McCartney, who has led protests against the 1
5,000-home settlement with councillor husband John, said: "We know Willow Green is incapable of becoming an eco-town, but until the government formally rules it out, it lingers like a dark cloud blotting out the summer sun from our communities.

"It's now seven months since we first heard about the Willow Green development. We've sent Mr Wright this postcard wishing him a nice summer holiday, and urging him to allow residents of Eggborough, Kellington and Beal to enjoy their summer by having the threat of having their village turned into one of North Yorkshire's largest towns removed."

Leeds City Region members voted 11-0 against housing an eco-town at any of the four GVA shortlisted sites – Willow Green, Gascoigne Wood mine, Burn Airfield and RAF Church Fenton – at a key meeting in June.

But the government is expected to announce a fresh consultation on the former Sherburn pit site after the summer recess, and the Willow Green bid also remains on the table.

Selby MP John Grogan, who backs the eco-town concept, said he expects an announcement on the green schemes in September or October.
