A GROUP of 28 green campaigners have appeared in court charged with obstructing the railway during a coal train protest.
The activists, from London, Wales, Manchester, Leeds, and Lincolnshire, went before District Judge Fred Rutherford at Selby Magistrates' Court today (Monday).

A total of 17 defendants denied a charge of walking on the railway, sitting in and climbing on board an EWS freight train at West Bank near Carlton on June 13.

The other 11 didn't enter a plea.

Mr Rutherford adjourned their cases until October 7 for committal to York Crown Court after deciding the alleged offences were too serious for him to deal with.

The maximum sentence for the charge is two years in prison.
