RESIDENTS in Biggin are celebrating victory in their long-running battle to have the main village road adopted and repaired.
Parish councillors and villagers had fought since the 1960s to have Town Street adopted by the Highways Agency to ensure its much-needed repair.

The latest battle commenced in September 2006 when Yvonne and Phillip Mason researched its history backed by prospective Conservative MP Nigel Adams and county councillor Andrew Lee and this week came the news they had been waiting for.

Mr Adams said: "I am delighted, firstly for Yvonne and all the villagers who have worked tirelessly to get this road adopted and I'm also pleased North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has listened to us and changed its mind by backing local residents."

Coun Lee added: "This proves it's worth taking on bureaucracy if you have a good case and can be persistent."

The cause attracted photographs, written statements and memories submitted by current and former Biggin residents all eager to convince NYCC the road fulfilled the requirements of the Highways Act and was eligible for repair.

Yvonne said: "To say we are delighted is an understatement.
"Once the road surface has been repaired it will be so much easier for residents to walk down Town Street in normal shoes, without fear of getting wet or falling in the potholes. We thank the Highways Agency for their willingness to accept our submission."
