HARDY contestants took a real pounding when they had a knockout day at the inaugural conker championship in Selby on Sunday.
The Bay Horse pub in Micklegate hosted the event, which rang to the sound of the pub's regulars knocking seven shades of shine off each others' conkers!

The eventual winner was John Hooper, whose winning horse chestnut bashed all-comers into submission to take the winning trophy. Runner-up was John Walker.

Pub landlady Sharon Hooper, 34, denied contest-rigging as she handed her uncle John first prize!

She said: "I always do quirky things on Sundays. I decided it would be a great idea to host a conker contest.

"It must have been strange for anyone walking into the pub to see a bunch of grown men playing conkers.

"Two Chinese ladies who visited were totally confused at our British eccentricity. We hope to host another contest next October."
