AN INNOVATIVE coach driver's "stock 'n' roll" service for Selby shoppers has faced stiff opposition from rival cabbies within its first fortnight.
Dennis Marshall's Discount Travel door-to-door delivery for Morrisons customers and their trolleys, while being welcomed by store manager Andy Whittleton and shop-goers, angered other taxi drivers competing for trade outside the busy town centre store.

Last week saw district council chiefs forced to intervene after the disabled-friendly public service vehicle was blocked in by seven hackney carriage operators enraged over the new operation's competitive rates.

Mr Marshall said: "The other drivers didn't like my coach being on the taxi rank so I moved it to keep the peace. I think really they don't like that it's large enough to take several customers and trolleys at a time and these savings are passed on to customers.

"Since Somerfield closed its home delivery customers have started using my coach to buy everything they need. They wheel their shopping trolleys on and I take them to their front door and return them – with £1 deposits deducted from the fee."

Mr Marshall, pictured with the Portholme Road store boss, continued: "Morrisons is pleased because customers are able to buy more in store and customers are happy they can easily manage all their shopping at once without public transport or a big expense.

"It's just disappointing to receive opposition from other drivers considering they are free to take passengers from any store or taxi rank in Selby."

SDC licensing officer Tim Grogan confirmed: "I warned several drivers about their future conduct with regard to obstructing Mr Marshall's vehicle." (Trolley 01 IC) Picture: Ian Chilvers
