DARING thieves made off with thousands of pounds of jewellery during an audacious raid at Herbert Brown in Selby on Tuesday afternoon.
Two men in balaclavas entered the Gowthorpe shop wielding hammers at about 4.30pm, threatening staff before making off with the gems.

They drove off in a black Ford Focus, vehicle registration KL56YCN.

The shop manager, who declined to be named, said: “I was very scared. The men demanded I open a glass cabinet and they took about £40,000 worth of jewellery.

“The whole incident only lasted about a minute. It was premeditated and was the worst raid in my ten years here.”

Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone with information should contact Det Martin Hinchliffe, of North Yorkshire Police, on 0845 6060247.
