Petition tops 1,000 mark

MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition in support of a restaurant owner facing Selby District Council planning enforcement action.
Number 8 owner Tim Clay started the petition after local authority officers visited his Park Street restaurant to check if he had removed a false ceiling, constructed as he converted the run-down Park Street premises.
The 42-year-old father of three, who opened the £500,000 business last December, lowered the height of the first floor ceiling to install spotlights, but failed to get planning permission to alter the proportion of the Grade II listed former office block.
SDC planning committee members voted in November 2007 to take enforcement action against Tim, calling at the restaurant on March 26 to see if he had complied.
Now Tim hopes the sheer volume of support from customers for his venture will help convince the council to drop the case.
Tim said: "My intention in starting the petition was just born out of anger and helplessness. I didn't know what else I could do.
"The support from customers has been amazing. The petition filled up with at least 500 signatures in the first few weeks, and I had old ladies knocking on the door at 9.30am getting me to open up just so they could come in to sign it!"
Tim argues the ceiling hides no original architecture but allows the installation of subdued lighting to create a better ambience in the restaurant.
He added: "When I show customers the ceiling in question, they think the council's action is disgraceful and want to sign the petition."
Tim plans to hand the document in to the council when it has been signed by 1,500 people.
Selby District Council leader Coun Mark Crane said: "This shows the strength of support from people in the town for Tim, and I personally continue to wish him and his business well."
