THE courage, quick-thinking and commitment of top police officers in the Selby district have been recognised at an awards ceremony.
Area commander's commendations were presented to a number of officers, including Selby TC John Kendall, who talked a man out of hanging himself in the loft of a house at Sherburn.
Selby PCs Stuart Barnett and David Hunter were also commended for o
utstanding duty, problem solving, team work and resilience after negotiating with a man who had abducted a child for one-and-a-half hours, before he handed the tot over.
PC Hunter was also commended for his action in dealing with suspects who shot at a woman cyclist on the A19 from a car.
After following the car into York, he alerted firearms officers, helped to intercept the vehicle, and four people were arrested.
PC Paul Moring, PC Lindsey Robson, PC Dan Fisher, PC Grant Gibson and TC Andy Rathbone were given commendations after talking a man who was determined to take his own life down to safety from the toll bridge over the A19 in Selby.
PC Fisher was also commended for apprehending thieves who had stolen lead from the roof of Selby Abbey. He followed them in their van into Dewsbury, before alerting traffic officers, and the men were arrested.
Selby-based Insp Dave Pegg said: "As their inspector, I feel very proud that each officer has displayed policing of the highest order, and Selby should be proud of their achievement. And it was also pleasing to see Coun Joyce Dyson handing out the commendations."
Central Area commander, Chief Superintendent Iain Spittal hosted Friday's ceremony at the Guildhall in York, along with guest of honour The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Irene Waudby.
Superintendent Steve Tarn and Detective Chief Inspector Dai Malyn assisted with the presentations.
Other guests included the The Sheriff of York, Coun Keith Hyman and the chairman of Selby District Council, Coun Dyson.
