EMOTIONAL tributes were paid this week to a young father who died on holiday in a river death tragedy while high on drugs.
Former Selby High School pupil Shane Turton plunged into the water in Amsterdam after taking a cocktail of hallucinogenic mushrooms and cannabis.

It's understood an off-duty fire-fighter and other passers-by dragged the 24-year-old's lifeless body from water near the city's railway station before desperate efforts were made to revive him.

Father-of-two Shane was put on a life support machine in hospital, but sadly died surrounded by family and friends on November 4.

Heartbroken grandparents Keith Turton, 66, and his wife Doreen, 68, this week paid tribute to their beloved grandson.

Doreen spoke of the special affection she had for Shane, who lived with her and his grandfather at their home in Holly Grove, Thorpe Willoughby, as a baby.

She said: "This is so upsetting – Shane was such a popular person. Although he had left Selby to live in Goole with his family about five years ago, he had many friends here.

"He was such a popular lad who loved his dogs Bodie and Khan and regularly visited me and his granddad. And he always wanted all the family to go to Spain, one of his favourite places."

The grieving gran added: "If something happens to me and my husband my daughter, Shane's mum Mandy, said she would take the rest of the family and Shane's ashes to Spain in compliance with his wishes."

His grandparents said Shane – named after Keith's favourite film – travelled to Amsterdam with friends from Goole on October 31.

They revealed the popular character died after taking a cocktail of hallucinogenic mushrooms and cannabis before falling in a river. Shane couldn't swim.

Mr Turton said it cost about £3,500 to bring his grandson's body back home to the UK last Thursday.

Shane also leaves a partner Caroline, their six-month-old daughter Claudia, one-year-old-daughter Casey, mum Mandy, sisters Natasha and Shania, both eight, Sigourney, 20, and 11-year-old brother Joel.

A funeral service will be held in Goole with cremation at Pontefract crematorium on a date to be fixed.
