A SEXUAL assault in Selby described by a senior police officer as "very rare" was carried out on a lone woman in the early hours of Sunday.
The woman was walking home from Selby town centre when she was attacked by a man in White Street in the Dixon Gardens area of town at about 3am.

Police said the woman may have been noticed on her journey, as her upper clothing had been ripped in an earlier incident.

Det Insp Steve Taylor, of York CID, said: "This type of offence is very rare in Selby, or indeed in North Yorkshire.

"The police would advise any female out at night to stay in the company of friends, remain in well-lit public areas, take a taxi home and always be aware of your surroundings."

The attacker is described as a white man, 5ft 10in tall, of medium build, with short brown gelled hair, and wearing blue jeans and a black zip-up top.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the woman after 3am, or has information about the identity of the attacker, or the incident to contact Selby police on 0845 6060247.
