TYPICAL! The first week in ages I miss my Selby Times there's a controversial letter in – Female drivers are dangerous (Selby Times, February 14).

Yes, I've had problems with female drivers. But for every poor female there seems to be a dozen barmy males. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen a red traffic light up ahead, yet these clots have to charge up to the back of the queue,
to sit there revving their engines uselessly.

Often they overtake a more sensible road user to get there sooner. And I can never remember being overtaken by a female on a level crossing. What do they think the double centre lines are for?

And now Gordon Brown wants to plonk an eco-town of such fools somewhere in the area. I wonder why he thinks this area is so ripe for such development? Did he use a satellite navigation map as a research tool?

Everyone knows how poor they are. Or perhaps he thinks Yorkshire's empty because he sees nothing from his first-class seat on the inter-city from Scotland. Is he unaware much of the line from York to the River Aire is almost brand new?

It's obvious the people who chose the likely locations for these illegitimate settlements have no idea of the true conditions in this district, and that major infrastructure enhancements would be needed to fit them in. This would mean vast investments in all aspects of infrastructure. Another new rail line or, better still, two would be needed, and a new sewage, waste disposal and recycling facilities.

And the words 'eco-town' must imply environmentally-friendly new cycle routes, as presumably all the new residents will sign a pledge to never own a car while resident in the new community. Or are the words 'eco-town' meant as economical town? 'New' communities – on the cheap! Obviously attractive to a Scot.
