Council has cut tax level
Published Date:

IN LAST week's paper, the article on council tax increases – Council tax bills to push £1,500 mark – stated Selby Town Council had increased its council tax by 4.1 per cent for the second consecutive year. This isn't the case.
This year, Selby Town Council's Band D council tax is actually less than last year. And the previous year's increase was 0.03 per cent. The article gives a totally misleading impression of the work of Selby Town Council.
Let's not forget whilst Selby District Council is priding itself on a 3.9 per cent increase, they're cutting travel subsidies for over 65s and the disabled; they're cutting the Selby Canal Festival and they're cutting Selby Park brass band concerts.
At the same time, Selby Town Council is decreasing its council tax, but continues to provide all the services it did before. It's also interesting to compare Selby Town Council's tax bill with other areas.
For roughly £20 more than Hirst Courtney or Riccall, Selby's residents get the Christmas lights, bonfire and fireworks display, hanging baskets, Family Fun Day and the ever-popular events at Selby Town Hall Arts Centre. And in total, Selby Town Council's Band D bill is still less than the cost of a pint of beer a week.
