Have to stand up to your party

I WAS very surprised to see Tory party candidate Nigel Adams saying in the local media recently that extended opening hours for doctors "would have a detrimental effect on Selby people" – 'Super surgery' elderly and infirm risk fears (Selby Times, March 6).

The average annual income of a GP is more than £95,000. Doctors need to provide value for money.

I know Mr Adams is a wealthy man but many people in Selby can't always afford to take time off work to see a doctor. I'm fully behind the government's plan to get GPs to open for an additional three hours each week in the evening or on Saturday mornings.

Moreover, I'm disappointed Mr Adams has said nothing in the local newspapers about the Conservative council's plan to take away half-fare rail travel for pensioners and the disabled. He should be publicly calling on his Conservative colleagues at the Civic Centre to think again.

If Mr Adams is to convince people he really cares about Selby, he needs from time to time to stand up against his own party.
